Nonlinear Biocomputation:

Overall questions

The brain does computation different to computers. It works with cycle times far below the cycle times used in nowadays computers, and it is based on a highly and recurrently connected architecture, a building principle that is typically avoided in the design of artificial chips.

Issues that differentiate between cortical and artificial computation are:

  • Noisiness of cortex
  • Different synchronization strategy of cortex (lack of CMOS clock synchronization)

Methods

We use methods from nonlinear dynamics and statistical mechanics, where we define exact models and, if available, compare with experimental data.

Research topics

We work on seven specific research issues:

  1. Principles and information content of cochlea hearing (with A. Kern). A. Kern succeeded in making a novel, biomorphical and biologically detailed model of the cochlea, based on Hopf bifurcators, that outperforms other models by far. Moreover, we also managed to establishing close connections with other auditory groups (Prof. D. Robert, Univ. of Bristol), where we were welcomed to introducing our views of the role of nonlinear dynamics into the field. Collaboration: Dr. S. Launer, Phonak AG, Prof. D. Robert, Univ. of Bristol.
  2. The role of noise in biological computation, with emphasis on computation by generalized locking (with A. Kern). Recent data from insect hearing from the group of Prof. Robert emphasize the role of noise in biological computation. To understand the data, we already started to head into the field of stochastic resonance theory. Another occurrence of stochastic resonance was recently observed in a project with a semester student, J. Buchli, where we successfully studied holographs and head towards studying holographic neural networks. Collaboration: Prof L.A. Bunimovich, Georgia Inst. of Tech., Prof. A. Pavlov, Vavilov Institute, St. Petersburg.
  3. Cortical chaos and control mechanisms (with A. Kern). On the topic of cortical chaos and control mechanisms, where we investigated interesting experimental data from Prof. Martin and compared with biologically detailed neuron simulations previously made by D. Blank. We got evidence for a possible realization of our concept of computation by locking from these data, and made a corresponding publication in J. Cog. Brain Res.(2002). Here, we succeeded in an improved understanding of interspike interval distributions by means of Log-Log plot analysis, proved the chaos property of experimental data and published papers on how this chaotic behavior could be controlled/ stabilized (J. Stat. Phys.(2002) and Phys. Rev. E (2001)). Collaboration: Dr. C. Wagner, Univ. of Bern
  4. Entropy measures of complexity, application to coupled systems (with M. Christen). We developed a measure of information complexity, by which we will be able to asses the performance loss in damaged hearing. This measure is able to characterize the overall performance of a dynamical process in an integral way, while up to now measures of information only concentrated on particular observable measures. The concept already has attracted great interest by renowned scientists. Also here, publications can be expected for 2002. The developed concept will be applied in future to measure complexity and complexity loss by damage of neuron response to hearing. Furthermore, we established a research collaboration with Prof. D. Hell, Klinik Burghölzli, where the same measure will be applied in a different context. Collaboration: Prof. L.A. Bunimovich, Georgia Inst. of Tech., Prof. S. Stramaglia, Univ. of Bari
  5. Biological computing: Locking as the mesoscopic response paradigm and means of information encoding and computation (with J.-J.v.d.Vyver). We shifted focus and made progress on the more theoretical side, by understanding -the range of influence of the particular interaction between different types of neurons, and -impact of the connectivity for these questions. Using biologically detailed simulation we were able to show that the theoretical predictions made on the locking principle emerge, even in more general conditions than expected (locking of bursting, v.d.Vyver, unpublished). Collaboration: Prof. W.-H. Steeb, Rand Afrikaans Univ.
  6. Statistical mechanics approach towards clustering (with S. Lecchini). Collaboration: Prof. S. Stramaglia, Univ. of Bari.
  7. Statistical mechanics of neural networks (with Th. Ott). On the basis of a recent KTI contract with Novartis AG, we recently started getting involved with a statistical mechanics approach towards clustering and with statistical mechanics aspects of neural networks in general (with Th. Ott). We managed to make connections to the leading groups in this area.Collaboration: Prof. S. Stramaglia, Univ. of Bari.
